Animals and the Islam

Animals and the Islam

Those, visiting this website, can make a significant contribution in the prevention of animal cruelty throughout the entire (Islamic) World by translating or bookmarking and printing the page “Treatment of Animals in Islam” and by distributing this page to as many kids, teachers, schools and people as possible.

SURAS & HADITH ON ANIMALS IN ISLAM
In an attempt to eliminate animal cruelty, we have compiled a small number of Ayat (verses) from different Suras (major Topics or Chapters written in the Holy Koran) and lower down the page, several Hadith (stories attributed to the Prophet pbuh, recorded by his followers). All of them relate to animals and birds. Above some of these Ayat is italicized text, an interpretation as to it’s reference or clarifying the meaning in English. We feel that all Faiths can learn from such teachings as it shows compassion and respect for all of God’s creatures.

Of interest to all followers of the Islamic Faith, is that there is not a single Sura in the Holy Koran that mentions that Allah disfavours dogs as being unclean. Such ideas in the Middle East are totally erroneous and are based on misinformation that DO NOT conform with The Devine Word of the Holy Koran or with the spirit of Islam.

AYAT

6:38 “There is not an animal that lives on the Earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but forms part of communities like you. Nothing have We omitted from the Book, and they all shall be gathered to their Lord in the end.”

11.6: And there is no animal in the earth but on Allah is the sustenance of it, and He knows its resting place and its depository all (things) are in a manifest book.

16:79 “Do they not see the birds committed to fly in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up in the air except Allah. This should be (sufficient) proof for people who believe”.

The Dog and the People of the Cave (the People of the Cave, favoured by Allah, were fleeing oppression and hid in a mountain cave for more than 300 years, with their dog as companion.).

18:18 “You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst.”

The interpretation of part of this Sura is that the dog was counted amongst the good People of the Cave .

18:22. “Some would say, they were three; their dog being the fourth, while others would say, Five; the sixth being their dog, as they guessed. Others said, seven, and the eighth was their dog. Say, My Lord is the best knower of their number. Therefore, do not argue with them; just go along with them. You need not consult anyone about this.”

24:41 “Seest thou not that it is Allah Whose praises are celebrated by all beings in the heavens and on earth, and by the birds with extended wings? Each one knows its prayer and psalm, And Allah is aware of what they do.”

24:45 & 25:54 The Holy Koran mentions that all life “originated” from water and that man himself is “created” of water and all the animals on earth were also created from water.

HADITH

The Prophet (pbuh) not only preached to the people to show kindness to one another but also to all living creatures. He forbade the practice of cutting tails and manes of horses, of branding animals at any soft spot, and of keeping horses saddled unnecessarily. (Muslim, Sahih Muslim)

If the Prophet (pbuh) saw any animal over-burdened or ill-fed he would pull up alongside the owner and say, “Fear Allah in your treatment of animals.” (Abu Daoud, Kitab Jihad)

A companion to the Prophet (pbuh) came to him carrying baby chicks in his clothing and mentioned that the mother bird had hovered over them all along. He was directed to return the chicks back to the same bush. (Mishkat, Abu Daoud)

During a journey, someone travelling with the Prophet (pbuh), gathered some birds eggs from a nest. The mother bird’s painful cries and commotion attracted the attention of the Prophet (pbuh), who asked the man to return the eggs to the nest. (Bukhari, Sahih Bukhari)

Hadith

This Hadith was told by Abu Hurayra.

One day, Hz. Muhammed, our Prophet, was trying to perform Namaz. In Islam, Namaz is a ritual of worship which concentrates mostly on prayer. During His Namaz, a cat walked in. This cat was Muazza, a straycat, adopted by Hz. Muhammed. Muazza sat down on the Prophets cardigan and fell asleep.
In order to continue His Namaz, Hz. Muhammed had to stand up and some people, who had been watching the Prophet, were trying to chase Muazza away. But Hz. Muhammed did not allow these people to chase Muazza away, instead He asked for a pair of scissors. With these scissors, Mz. Muhammed cut his cardigan, so that Muazza could continue to sleep and would not be disturbed. Afer this, He continued performing Namaz.
