Signs of illness

What are the first most common signs of illness?

  • Change in eating and drinking pattern (this
may be difficult to identify in a shelter as many dogs share a house.)
  • Obvious weight change.
  • Looks very sad, becomes lazy and sleeps
    a lot.
  • A change in temperament from being a good
dog to one that growls and bites.

What action should be taken?

  • Put the dog in a small house away from the
    other dogs.
  • Make sure that the dog has clean water
    available.
  • If the dog is vomiting do not give any
    food.
  • If you have a thermometer check the dogs
    temperature.

Why should this action be
taken?

Action Reasons
for taking that action
Put the dog
in a small house away from the other dogs.
The dog may have a contagious
disease that could be passed to the other dogs. A sick dog needs to be
kept quiet and at a constant temperature.
If the dog is vomiting do
not give any food. Allow the dog clean, off the chill water, little and
often unless the dog vomits the water, in which case allow nothing until
dog is seen by the Vet.
A dog with vomiting or diarrhea
is better starved, but without water a dog will quickly dehydrate
Check the dog’s temperature. The dog’s temperature
should be between 38.5 and 39.5. If it is lower or higher contact the
Vet.
